New Hyper-HASE Polymer for Difficult-to-Thicken Surfactant Systems

CLEVELAND, March 4, 2010 – Noveon® Consumer Specialties of The Lubrizol Corporation (NYSE: LZ) introduces Novethix™ L-10 polymer, a new hyper-HASE solution for difficult-to-thicken surfactant systems. The new Novethix L-10 polymer thickens and controls the rheology of challenging surfactant cleansing systems such as mild, sulfate/amide-free shampoos and facial cleansers or very low surfactant content formulations for economy markets. A highly efficient, hydrophobically modified, alkali-swellable emulsion polymer designed for structuring most cleansing formulations containing anionic, nonionic and zwitterionic surfactants, Novethix L-10 polymer is also a cost effective improvement over many nonionic thickeners. It works synergistically with electrolytes and is an easy-to-use, cold-processable liquid.

Novethix L-10 polymer overcomes deficiencies generally found in surfactant systems containing nonionic thickeners, such as poor viscosity reproducibility, jelly-like flow aesthetics and instability when stored at elevated temperatures. Nonionic thickeners often require controlled heating and cooling protocols to achieve formulation reproducibility. Since Novethix L-10 polymer is an aqueous dispersion, formulations can be cold processed without the need for heat and long mixing times. The shear-thinning rheology of Novethix L-10 polymer provides smooth, honey-like flow and excellent temperature stability.

Key Formulation Benefits of Novethix L-10 Polymer

· Easy-to-use liquid form
· Cold-processable, requires no heat and short mixing time
· Excellent thickener for and provides clarity in low level surfactant formulations
· Cost effective alternative for nonionic thickeners, such as PEG-150 distearate
· Great structurant for mild, sulfate-free and nonionic formulations
· Can replace amides in cleansing formulations
· Enhances pearlescent appearance
· Stabilizes insoluble ingredients (oils, emollients, EGDS) and high oil-loaded body wash emulsions

Novethix L-10 polymer delivers aesthetically pleasing, smooth-textured flow properties and high clarity in a wide variety of cleansing applications. It can be used to create economy (low surfactant) clear or pearlized body washes and shampoos, and mild, sulfate-free, amide-free shower gels, shampoos and facial cleansers.
